Board of Supervisors
May 1, 2003

A Special Meeting of the Board of Supervisors for the Town of Maine was held at 8:00 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2003, in the Town Hall, 6111 North 44th Avenue, Wausau, WI 54401.
Agenda for this meeting was posted on April 25, 2003 at the Chapter Two Restaurant, Northside Citgo, Richard’s Supper Club, Schmidt’s Bar and the Town Hall.
Present were Chairman Utecht, Supervisors Duane Grunenwald and Marty Zernicke, Town Workers Todd Bishop and John Marquardt, Clerk Betty Hoenisch and Tom Ellias, Otto Ramthun and M.O. Bohrer from Michels Materials.
Chairman Utecht called the meeting to order at 7:35 a.m.
Chairman Utecht stated the meeting had been called to obtain information on road base material. Otto Ramthun, Sr. from Michels Materials introduced himself, Tom Ellias and M. O. Bohrer. Mr. Ramthun handed out information on A.B. & J. Granite and Wisconsin Rotten Granite. Mr. Ramthun explained that the town could save money over a long period of time if they would use A.B. & J. because of the wear factor of 2.4 times longer than rotten granite and also the fact that it requires less grading.
Mr. Bohrer explained the Department of Transportation specifications and testing of road material, which showed the durability of A.B. & J. and also showed that rotten granite does not meet the requirements of the Dept. of Transportation because when water gets in the cracks and crevices of granite it then breaks down and deteriorates. John Marquardt had questions on the deterioration rate of granite once it is exposed to air.
Todd Bishop questioned if the A.B. & J. granite was dusty like rotten granite and how many inches of material it would take to fix the granite roads. Mr. Ramthun explained that there is less dust because it is watered, rolled and compacted and does not break down like rotten granite. Mr. Ramthun stated that it would take approximately 4 to 6 inches to fix roads depending on the amount of traffic.

Marty Zernicke asked for an estimate to haul, water and roll the material and Chairman Utecht stated they would like Michels Materials to do Keller Drive with the A.B. & J material. Mr. Ramthun replied that they would lay, shape and roll Keller Drive for $5.25 a ton for the Town. Mr. Ramthun estimated the job to be $9,870.00 with 4 inches of material being used, $13,597.00 with 5 inches of material and $16,313.00 with 6 inches of material. Mr. Ramthun explained that the road could later be chip seal coated and the town would have a very good road.
Meeting was adjourned.
Respectively submitted,

Betty Hoenisch, Clerk
